Lens character and storytelling
The project connects an optical tool with a storytelling question: how can the character of a lens support the dramaturgy? In ARRI’s published cinematographer perspectives, Micky describes the filters as a way to adjust lens characteristics in service of the scene.
Camera and lenses
ARRI’s equipment description for The Impressionists – Germany lists an ALEXA 35 camera and Signature Prime lenses in 21 mm, 29 mm, 35 mm, 58 mm and 75 mm focal lengths, used with Impression V Filters.
The filters alter the optical character of the Signature lenses, including the appearance of out-of-focus highlights. ARRI’s documentation explains how positive and negative filters produce different effects; the German film is one of the commissioned works demonstrating this creative approach.
